How to Choose an Affiliate Product to Promote

Choose a product that solves a problem your audience actually has and that you can describe accurately. Examine merchant reputation, terms, support, refund policy and the visitor experience—not only commission.

What a sound approach looks like

The durable approach is editorial: solve the problem first, explain the fit honestly and disclose the commercial relationship.

A good implementation is understandable to someone seeing it for the first time. It also leaves a measurement trail: you can identify what changed, where the visitor came from and whether the change helped.

What to do next

  1. List the audience need first.
  2. Inspect the complete customer journey.
  3. Compare realistic alternatives and limitations.

How to judge the result

Judge a recommendation by visitor usefulness as well as commissions or click-through rate. Compare like with like and give the test enough time to reveal a useful pattern. Keep the original version as a reference rather than changing everything at once.

Watch out: High commission does not make a weak product suitable.
