Improve Conversions

What Is Exit Intent?

Exit intent is a browser-based estimate that a visitor may be about to leave, often inferred from pointer movement on desktop. On touch devices the signal is less direct, so implementations vary and can be unreliable.

The practical principle

Conversion work is usually the removal of uncertainty and friction, not the addition of pressure.

Keep the first test deliberately small. A limited test makes errors cheaper, encourages honest comparison and gives you a clear next decision instead of a pile of unrelated numbers.

What to do next

  1. Use a helpful last-chance option, not a threat.
  2. Suppress repeat displays after dismissal.
  3. Test desktop and mobile behaviour separately.

How to judge the result

Watch for technical failure, unclear wording, poor message match and avoidable choices. Compare like with like and give the test enough time to reveal a useful pattern. Keep the original version as a reference rather than changing everything at once.

Watch out: Do not claim the technology knows a visitor’s intention with certainty.
